10 Compact Crossovers With Great Gas Mileage

$

2014 nissan rogue

Few segments have grown as quickly over the last decade than these SUV-like cars that offer greater utility without the efficiency sacrifices of a larger vehicle.

Gas mileage is improving all the time too, allowing the average compact crossover to use less fuel than regular compact cars were returning only a few years ago.

Which are most efficient? We've picked the ten best fuel-sippers in the compact crossover class. There are a few surprises here and the omission of a few — like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V — that you may have expected to do better.

1. 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid
31 mpg combined (29 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)

2014 subaru xv crosstrek hybrid

Kudos to Subaru here — when we last looked at fuel-efficient crossovers, its XV Crosstrek made an appearance but didn't quite reach the top. With the addition of a hybrid drivetrain it's now made that leap, and as far as both city and combined mileage go it's the best here.

Power comes from the combined efforts of Subaru's traditional flat-four gasoline engine, and a small 10 kW (13 horsepower) electric motor. It's largely a 'mild hybrid' in that its EV mode only cuts in under very, very gentle driving. You're better viewing it as an XV with improved gas mileage than a proper hybrid vehicle.

2. 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d
30 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway)

2015 bmw x3 series

While the Subaru above uses hybrid technology to return good gas mileage, BMW has opted for diesel. 34 mpg highway is not bad at all for a vehicle of the X3's bulk, and the 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine offers strong performance.

You get an eight-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and 180 horsepower at your disposal--which should make the BMW one of the punchiest cars here despite its economy potential.

3. 2014 Nissan Juke
29 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway)
2014 nissan juke

A little smaller than the rest, the Juke nevertheless returns good gas mileage. What it lacks in size it makes up for in striking styling, and the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine sends its power through an automatic transmission.

We struggled to hit the Juke's mileage figures when testing one a few years ago, but the Juke has at least enjoyed a minor facelift and equipment tally bump since then, so it's a little better to live with on a daily basis.

4. 2015 Mazda CX-5 2WD manual
29 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway)

2014 mazda cx 5

Mazda has made a big deal of its Skyactiv engine and transmission technology, and with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder the CX-5 is one of the most economical compact crossovers on the market. With a manual transmission and two-wheel drive — and no fancy tricks — it achieves up to 35 mpg on the highway, while combined mileage is a respectable 29 mpg.

That drops to 28 combined if you opt for all-wheel drive — a small price to pay for those in less clement climates. It's a little sportier to drive than most, too.

5. 2014 Nissan Rogue
28 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)

2014 nissan rogue

Of more usable size than the Juke, the latest Rogue still has respectable economy ratings. That's at least in part down to Nissan's persistence with continuously-variable transmissions to boost economy — the Rogue matches the frugality of several other vehicles here despite using a 2.5-liter gasoline engine.

It isn't the most exciting vehicle you'll ever drive, but there's an option for seven seats, it's spacious, comfortable, and with prices starting at $22,790, it's competitively priced too.

6. 2014 Buick Encore
28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)

2014 buick encore

A 1.4-liter engine? In a crossover? Actually, things aren't so bad — in the 2014 Encore you'll find the 1.4-liter turbocharged unit more familiar from cars like the Chevy Cruze and Sonic. The downsized unit is pretty efficient too, with the automatic transmission — up to 28 mpg combined.

In terms of utility the Encore sits between the Nissan Juke and some of the other crossovers here — like the Juke, it sits on a subcompact platform but interior volume is greater than the average subcompact.

7. 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek AWD
28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)

Subaru_XV_Crosstrek 17

We were a little disappointed when we drove the Subaru XV Crosstrek a while back, but our disappointment doesn't stop it being one of the more efficient compact crossovers on the market. At 35 mpg highway, its four-cylinder boxer engine matches that of the Mazda CX-5's best efforts, though drops 1 mpg in the city and overall.

You do get standard AWD into the bargain though, and an automatic gearbox that may be preferable for some drivers. If you can't stretch to the hybrid, the regular version is at least fairly close behind.

8. 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec 4matic
28 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)

2013 mercedes benz glk class

Another German entrant you'd not normally find in "most efficient" lists, though perhaps this one should be a little further up — it is a diesel, after all. Edged out by its rival from BMW, the 2.1-liter diesel and seven-speed automatic combo make the GLK an easy car to cruise around in, and we expect real-world mileage to be a little better — we returned almost 35 mpg when testing it in 2013.

Performance from the 200-horse, 369 pounds-feet diesel is strong, and the price is hefty too — starting at $38,980. As such, the Mercedes is more a purchase for existing prestige car customers looking to reduce their bills, than a buying wanting to save from the word go.

9. 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2WD
28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway)

2012 mitsubishi outlander se

You might have forgotten the Outlander Sport still existed — the smaller Mirage has taken more of the fuel economy headlines recently. But the compact crossover is actually respectably economical in two-wheel drive format.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and there's a continuously-variable transmission directing power to the wheels. It looks and drives sporty, equipment levels are high and at $20,670 for models with CVT, it's less expensive than most here too.

10. 2014 Subaru Forester AWD
27 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway)

2014 subaru forester xt

Subaru should be commended for getting a third entry on this list. The Forester can't quite match the XV Crosstrek for economy but that's to be expected — it's a larger, bluff-fronted vehicle.

Reasonable highway economy of 32 mpg pulls combined economy to 27 mpg, one mile per gallon below that of the regular gasoline XV. All-wheel drive is again standard, as is a boxer layout to the four-cylinder engine.

The Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Is The Best SUV On — Or Off — The Road

2014 Range Rover Sport SuperchargedThe 2014 Range Rover Sport is truly a one-of-a-kind vehicle. Its combination of off-road prowess and sports-sedan style handling is unrivaled.

Since its launch in 2005, the SUV has become one of the most successful products in Jaguar Land Rover's long and storied history. In fact, in 2011 and 2012, all by itself the Range Rover Sport outsold the entire Jaguar brand

Business Insider recently spent a week putting a 2014 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged through its paces in the urban jungle of New York City and the winding hills of upstate New York. With an as-tested price of $92,480, our fully loaded Sport, in a stoic scotia grey, ticked virtually every box on Range Rover's long option sheet. (The base model starts at about $62,000.)

With a Range Rover-style body mounted on a Land Rover Discovery/LR4 chassis, the first-generation Sport was a highly successful bit of sleight of hand. However, the new Sport is built on a 100% Range Rover platform.

Here are the takeaways from our adventures.

The new Range Rover Sport looks incredible. The swanky new design is stylish in New York City, but it doesn't prevent the SUV from negotiating the jungles of South America.

The Sport isn't just a creature of Fifth Avenue or the Amazon. A modified version blitzed Germany's legendary Nürburgring course in just 8 minutes, 14 seconds, setting the track record for fastest production SUV.

The RR Sport also set the record for fastest production SUV at the treacherous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2013.

BMW X5 Security Plus

BMW presented its all-new armored X5 Security Plus SUV this week at the Moscow International Auto Salon. To show off the true toughness of the high-security sport utility, the company did what was only logical: attack it with a barrage of machine gun and rifle fire.

According to BMW, the SUV is designed with a "comprehensive system of protection against violent assault, kidnapping, and organized crime." This is certainly not a vehicle for the faint of heart.BMW X5 Security PlusThe X5 Security Plus features a myriad of security features like an armored passenger cell with sealed joints that provide bullet-stopping protection in the seams where the armored body panels meet. The Security edition also features VR6-level blast-certified bulletproof windows

At its heart, the X5 Security Plus is still a high-performance BMW product, meaning it offers a quality driving experience. Propulsion comes from a 450 hp TwinPower turbocharged V8 engine mated to an intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

Take a look at this 2010 video in which BMW elaborates on the many features found on its line of Security models.

2015 cadillac escalade_100462756_l

Automakers reported August sales on Wednesday and their numbers were fantastic. The industry remains on pace to sell 17 million or more new cars and trucks in the U.S. in 2014.

This is extremely impressive when you consider that sales collapsed during the financial crisis to a 10-million annual level.

Industry observers and analysts were concerned that the sales might settle into a 14-to-15 million yearly range, which would have been bad news for some of the smaller players, who would have struggled to achieve meaningful market share.

It would have been rough for the Big Boys, too, as they battled over tiny market-share gains and fought to hang on to customers.

So, boffo U.S. auto sales are helping everyone to succeed. But there's another big story in the numbers.

Remember SUVs? We left them for dead five years ago. Lousy gas mileage, at a time when gas prices were rising, sent buyers in search of smaller, more fuel-efficient rides.

ford explorerThe federal government also mandated better overall fuel economy for the automakers' fleets, which gave car companies a reason to build a lot of really good small vehicles.

And then there were some more ... conceptual developments.

SUVs — especially BIG SUVs — just got a bad name. You wanted to be seen in a modest Prius, not a gigantic Suburban.2013 Toyota Prius V

2015 chevy chevrolet suburbanWhat a difference a few years makes. SUVs are now pushing new-vehicle sales back to levels not seen since the early 2000s. Compact SUVs, such as Honda's CRV and Ford's Escape, are extremely popular. But so are full-size SUVs. GM's August sales were tepid overall, but, as USA Today reported, its Cadillac division "couldn't keep the hulking Escalade [luxury SUV] in stock."

Pickup trucks are also helping to keep the party going. But in the U.S., Ford, GM, and Chrysler are always going to be able to sell a lot of pickups. Which is good. Pickups are profitable to build and sell.

And so are SUVs. When SUVs are selling, everybody starts to make money.

2014 Jeep Cherokee SUV The big difference between the pickup and SUV markets is that a certain level of full-size pickup sales can be assumed, simply because owners wear out F-150s and Silverados faster than, say, Corollas and Accords. SUV sales, by contrast, are sensitive to gas prices and consumer sentiment.

Gas prices aren't currently low, but they are stable. Americans also like SUVs — minivans might be better family haulers, but they come with that dreaded minivan stigma. And SUVs are far less truck-like than they were 10 years ago; the automakers have reengineered them to look more like modern-day station wagons and drive more like cars (and invented a whole new SUV-esque genre, the "Crossover").

Finally, SUVs offer versatility: You can fill them with kids, friends, pets, and gear — and if road or weather conditions are poor, well ... SUVs do have off-roading in their DNA.

2014 Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8 Is the SUV revival sustainable? Only time will tell. But for now, the automakers are giving thanks that the sport utility vehicle wasn't left for dead.

Volvo's New SUV Will Be A Hot Rod That's Easy On The Environment

Volvo_XC90_R_Design

Volvo's XC90 SUV has been the Swedish automaker's sales leader for the better part of the last decade. With the all-new second generation model set to arrive early next year, the XC90 should continue to be a contender in the highly competitive — but highly profitable — SUV market.

In the meantime, Volvo has released the first details of its XC90 R-Design, the sports-oriented variant of the SUV.  Volvo 240 WagonThe popular perception of a Volvo people carrier is a boxy car with a small engine under the hood — the familiar 240 wagon of the 1980s, for example. Safety for these vehicles was, for the time they were produced, state of the art. But performance was tepid.

Things are different now at Volvo. Sturdy construction and cutting-edge safety technology remain, but the company's Chinese owners have pumped more than $11 billion into R&D. The result is a lineup of sleek automobiles built on Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture platform, along with a lineup of ultra-powerful and efficient Drive-E powerplants.

Leading the charge is the XC90 — and its sporty R-Design variant.

To set it apart from the already suave SUV, the folks at Volvo gave the R-Design a bevy of special performance features, such as massive 22-inch sport wheels, low profile tires, an aero-kit, and dual exhausts. To top it off, Volvo's designers gave the new XC90 a set of dazzling T-shaped LED headlamps which they call — and we're not making this up — "Thor's Hammer."Volvo_XC90_R_Design SkitchEven more impressive will be the engine options available on XC90 R-Design. Drivers can choose from several versions of a modern 2-liter engine that features both supercharging and turbocharging. While Volvo loyalists will miss the brand's venerable 5 cylinder engines from its old wagons — or even the sweet Yamaha V8 from the first generation XC90 — the new 316 hp Drive-E motor is wonderful.

Business Insider had the opportunity to preview the Drive-E powerplant in Volvo's new S60 T6 sedan and found it to be gutsy and responsive with no hint of turbo-lag. In fact, the engine's broad torque band hides its small displacement so well that most drivers would easily mistake it for a much larger unit.Volvo XC90 Twin Engine Hybrid And if that's not enough power for you, buyers can also opt for a 400hp hybrid electric version of the powerplant. This setup, known as "twin engine", features a plug-in hybrid system that emits a Prius-like 60 g/km of carbon dioxide. In fact, the XC90 is the world's first seven-seat plug-in hybrid.

Performance from sports hybrid should be terrific. The less-powerful S60 T6 sedan has been clocked doing 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds. With the extra torque from the electric motor, the XC90 R-Design Hybrid shouldn't be far off of that time.2015 Volvo XC90Volvo has also completely revamped the interior of the XC90. Gone are the button-laden interfaces found across the whole Volvo line-up. Instead, drivers will see a LCD-based center console. The small, 7-inch non-touchscreen display in other Volvo models will be replaced in the XC90 by a massive iPad-sized touchscreen display installed vertically, à la the Tesla's Model S.

This all makes the cabin feel much higher in scale than the outgoing model. The interior is covered in fine leather and tastefully located wood accents.Volvo_XC90_R_DesignSince this is a Volvo, the latest safety technology is an absolute must. For the new XC90, Volvo will introduce its new City Safety system, which can bring the car to an automatic stop when it detects an upcoming obstacle. Even cooler, City Safety can pick out pedestrians and bicyclists on the road.

All this new design and technology won't come cheap. The 316 hp XC90 T6 should start at just under $50,000 when it arrives next year.

Mercedes-Benz GLA compact SUV mountain road

The Mercedes-Benz GLA, a compact SUV designed to compete with cars like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, hit the market last month.

After showing off a flashy concept version of the ride at the Shanghai Motor Show last year, Mercedes officially debuted the GLA at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The GLA starts at just over $33,000 and does 0-62 mph in 7.1 seconds. Fuel economy is a remarkable 54 miles per gallon with the most efficient, diesel-powered version — which, sadly, hasn't made it to the U.S.

The German automaker says the little SUV is capable in moderate off-road conditions, but that it's especially practical for "day-to-day urban lifestyle" driving.

And of course, it's filled with the little luxury features and trims that set Mercedes-Benz cars apart from the rest of the pack.

[An earlier version of this article was written by Alex Davies.]

Here's the GLA concept car Mercedes showed off at the Shanghai Motor Show last year.

Mercedes-Benz bills the GLA as a compact SUV that's both capable off-road and practical for everyday driving.

Weird Things Happen When You Drive A Porsche Around A Moose

Porsche Macan Moose Test

The world can throw unique challenges at cars. In Scandinavia, for example, you might have to dodge a moose in the middle of the road.

To test a vehicle's ability to do this, automotive journalists in Sweden conduct a "moose test" on new cars that hit the market. The test requires a car driving at 45-50 mph to swerve — in an "S" pattern — left into what would be oncoming traffic, and then right, returning to its original lane.

Swedish automotive magazine Teknikens Världrecently conducted the moose test on Porsche's hotly anticipated Macan SUV.

And that's when something weird happened.

In the moose test, the Macan's left front wheel locked up, causing the SUV to skid forward before turning right again.

Here's what the test looked like:

Porsche Macan Moose Test

The publication described the behavior of the Porsche as "strange," with reporter Linus Projtz commenting that the Macan didn't perform the way it's supposed to. Evidently, the Swedish test car's odd reaction to the evasive maneuver wasn't the only time this happened. Consumer Reports also reported that its Macan test car exhibited a similar quirk on a handling course.

Porsche claims the Macan's odd behavior in the moose test is the result of the SUV's Active Rollover Protection system. The car is actually steadying itself to avoid flipping over.

In case you were wondering, here's what a successful moose test looks like — coincidentally featuring the Macan's sibling in the Volkswagen stable, the Toureg.Volkswagen Toureg Moose TestAlthough the Macan's test was either a success or failure depending on whether you accept Porsche's explanation, the poorest recent performer in Teknikens Värld's moose test was Jeep's hot-selling Grand Cherokee. Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose TestAfter the initial test run, Teknikens Värld allowed Jeep's engineers to fiddle around with the setup of the Grand Cherokee and tried the test again.Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test TireThe results of the subsequent runs were not any better. In fact, the Swedish car publication put three different Grand Cherokee test cars through the 2012 test. The result: 7 blown tires, as the weight shift brought on by the maneuver put tremendous stress on the outside wheels.

Fortunately for Jeep, Teknikens Varld ran the moose test again on a 2014 Grand Cherokee, and this time the SUV passed with flying colors.

As important as moose avoidance may be, a car and its occupant's ability to survive a collision with a moose is equally, if not more, important. Consequently, cars from Scandinavia like Volvo and Saab are engineered to survive such an incident.

Avoiding and surviving collisions with wildlife is not just a safety issue for residents of Northern Europe. According to the Insurance Journal, car and deer collisions cause 200 deaths and $4 billion of damage annually in the U.S.

Here's footage from a 2011 moose crash test of a Volvo V70 wagon:

Lucky Americans: Gas Prices Are Falling And Falling (F, GM)

Current gas prices are shown at a Shell gas station in Encinitas, California October 10, 2014. REUTERS/Mike Blake

In September, gasoline prices slipping 1.0 percent after dropping 4.1 percent in August.

The current situation with gas prices stands in vivid contrast with the worst years of the Great Recession, when gas prices spiked, putting the crunch on motorists.

Lower gas prices have been a boon for U.S. automakers. The Detroit Big Three — General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler — have been able to build and sell more highly profitable trucks and SUVs as the market has recovered.

2015 cadillac escalade_100462756_l

Falling gas prices have enabled consumers to once again flock to vehicles with weaker fuel economy, after turning to small cars and hybrids in the 2009-2010 period. That might sound like a looming problem, if gas prices rise again. However, carmakers have raised the overall fuel efficiency of the trucks and SUVs, due largely to federal regulatory requirements.

Other consumer prices in the U.S. rose marginally in September, painting a weak inflation picture that should give the Federal Reserve ample room to keep interest rates low for a while.

The Labor Department said on Wednesday its Consumer Price Index edged up 0.1 percent last month after declining 0.2 percent in August. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast consumer prices being flat in September.

The CPI increased 1.7 percent in the 12 months through September after a similar rise in August. The CPI-W index, which is used to make adjustments for Social Security payments rose 1.7 percent in the third quarter from the year earlier.

Inflation has waned in recent months after quickening in the second quarter, in part as a strengthening dollar and slower economic growth in China and the euro zone dampen imported price pressures.

Chevy Cruze

Weak inflation and a recent global equities market sell-off could see the U.S. central bank in no rush to start raising its benchmark overnight interest rate, which it has kept near zero since December 2008.

Financial markets now expect the first interest rate hike in the fourth quarter of 2015 instead of the second quarter.

Stripping out food and energy prices, the so-called core CPI ticked up 0.1 percent last month after being unchanged in August. In the 12 months through September, the core CPI rose 1.7 percent after advancing by the same margin in August.

The Fed targets 2 percent inflation and it tracks an index that is running even lower than the CPI.

Food prices gained 0.3 percent after rising 0.2 percent in August.

Within the core CPI, shelter costs increased 0.3 percent in September after rising 0.2 percent in August. The shelter index was up 3.0 percent in the 12 months through September, the largest gain since January 2008.

Airline fares declined for a third straight month, while prices for new motor vehicles and apparel were unchanged.

Nissan Rogue New York Auto Show 2014

If you're an automaker and you're selling compact SUVs, you're doing well in a resurgent U.S. auto market.

Take Nissan and Honda.

Each reported strong crossover model sales and record October U.S. sales for their core brands on Monday.

Major automakers in the U.S. market are expected to show a rise of about 6 percent from a year earlier.

Nissan Motor sales rose 13.3 percent to 103,117 vehicles, beating expectations of a 11 percent rise. The Nissan brand's sales rose 15 percent, while the Infiniti luxury brand's sales fell 1.2 percent.

Nissan Rogue crossover sales increased 14 percent to nearly 14,700. The Sentra small car's sales rose 56 percent to 13,129.

2014 nissan rogue

Honda Motor's sales rose 5.8 percent, missing expectations of an 8 percent rise.

Honda's top-selling model was the CR-V crossover at 29,257, up 30 percent. The CR-V competes in the same segment as the Rogue and numerous other similar vehicles. The segment has enjoyed strong sales in 2014 as consumers head back to dealer showrooms, seeking versatile transportation options.

Honda CR-V MT Calipers

Compact SUVs offer many of the benefits of compact sedans, including good fuel economy, but their general design allows the to be used to more easily move around gear and cargo. The segment has traditionally appealed to young car buyers and small families.

CR-V sales were so good that they eclipsed Honda's Accord sedan, which had sales of 27,128, up 8 percent. Sales of the Civic, Honda's compact sedan, fell 12 percent to 24,154.

Motor Trend recently named the CR-V its SUV of the Year.

Here's The Stylish Crossover That's Going To Help Mercedes Conquer China

Mercedes G-Code

Mercedes-Benz's new engineering center in Beijing opened in style with the introduction of the Vision G-Code design concept. The stylish crossover SUV— conceived in Beijing under the guidance of Mercedes' main design center in Germany — is a vehicle the company envisions one day  filling the streets of Asia's megacities.

According to the Stuttgart-based auto giant, "The [design features a] combination of emotion and intelligence which conveys modern luxury in a compact form. As a result, the G-Code is also a perfect fit for today's understanding of design in China."

Mercedes-Benz is the Grand Poobah of Germany's three major luxury brands. BMW and Audi and numbers two and three. However, Chinese luxury car buyers have reversed that hierarchy. Audi and BMW have risen to the top of the luxury car market in the country, while Mercedes has lagged.

Mercedes-Benz G-Code

One of the hottest and fastest growing segments in the automotive business is crossover SUVs. For Mercedes, if the G-Code concepts becomes a reality, it could break the stranglehold currently maintained by BMW's X3/X6 and Audi's hot-selling Q3/Q5 models.

So far, the G-Code is just a design study, but with demand for crossovers running high in China, it's entirely possible we'll see a production G-Code hit the market in the future.

The Most Expensive Range Rover Of All Time Is An Homage To A Famous Gun Maker

Range Rover Holland And Holland

At $285,000 (£180,000), the Range Rover Holland & Holland is the most expensive SUV ever produced in the brand's 44-year history. This special edition — which costs $100,000 more than the top-of-the-line long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography Black upon which it's based — is a collaboration between the company's Special Vehicle Operation (SVO) and storied gun maker Holland & Holland.

So what makes this Range worth so much more than any other luxurious SUV?  The Holland & Holland edition is completely decked out in the finest soft-touch leather, and its interior woodwork is cut from a single massive piece of walnut to make sure all of the trim match up perfectly. The walnut is also finished with oil to resemble the stocks of Holland & Holland's signature rifles.

Range Rover Holland & Holland

The inside of the Range also features embroidered Holland & Holland logos and engraved metallic accents — an homage to the handcrafted shotguns and hunting rifles synonymous with the brand since 1835.

“The whole SVO team is very proud of this car, a bespoke design, which perfectly meets the very particular needs of Holland & Holland’s customers," said Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations managing director John Edwards. "This shows the huge potential of SVO, which encapsulates both off- and on-road performance as well as luxury and craftsmanship.”

Range Rover Holland & Holland Interior

The backseats are particularly impressive. Rear-seat passengers are treated to a pair of executive jet-style reclining seats, retractable walnut tray tables, and a pair of massive infotainment screens.

The Holland & Holland edition will be available with a variety of engine options — ranging from a humble diesel engine to Jaguar Land Rover's 500 horsepower supercharged V8 shared with Jaguar's XJR supersedan and the F-Type sports car.

Range Rover Holland & Holland

Another reason why this Range Rover costs so much is the fact that Holland & Holland guns are expensive — ridiculously expensive. With price tags ranging from $43,000 to $277,000 for the "Royal" double barrel shotgun, the company's guns make the high priced-Range Rover feel like a bit of a bargain.

To store these guns, Range Rover has installed a carbon fiber and aluminum gun case that can slide out through the tailgate. As with the rest of the car, it's finished in fine leather and polished walnut.

Range Rover Holland & Holland Rear

The Holland & Holland Range Rover will be very rare. Jaguar Land Rover plan to build roughly 40 examples a year over the next three years. Whomever is fortunate enough to get their hands on one of these mega-buck Range Rovers will certainly have the ultimate in luxurious hunting vehicles.

Mercedes Just Changed The Names Of A Bunch Of Its Cars

2013 Mercedes G63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz announced this week that it plans on introducing up to 30 new models by 2020. Eleven of these vehicles won't just be new — they'll be all-new.

To prepare for this deluge of newness, Mercedes is changing its naming strategy for the first time in more than 20 years.

Mercedes will keep the current scheme, which features a letter prefix to designate the model series — such as "S" or "CLS"— followed by a number to designate its place in hierarchy like "550" or "300."

However, it will change the letter designation for its SUVs and its SLK sports car.

Confused yet? Hang in there.

Under the new naming convention, the Stuttgart-based automaker will begin the name of all of its SUVs with the letter G — in honor of Mercedes' iconic G-Class. As a result, the current M-Class will become the GLE. The GLK compact SUV will becomes the GLC, while the full-size GL will will become the GLS.

In addition, the SLK sports car will now be known as the SLC.

Mercedes Benz Nomenclature

Changing the name of any car is a risky proposition for an automaker. For Mercedes, it's especially dangerous because the company has spent so much time, money, and effort to ingrain the identities of its hot-selling SUVs into the public's consciousness.

For some carmakers, changing the way vehicles are named has succeeded.

In the mid-1990s, Audi switched its naming structure from a numerical system to its current letter/number setup and it's worked out great.

But Acura's move away from names like "Legend" and "Integra" to "RLX" and "ILX "has been less of a home run.

However, as more and more automakers move towards a letter/number style naming scheme as opposed to actual names, a problem will emerge: there will be too many convoluted permutations of numbers and letters for consumers to know what's going on.

Periodic reorganization helps. The most recent example is Infiniti's move to designate all of its cars with the letter "Q" while its SUV's begin with "QX."

2012 Mercedes Benz ML63_AMGSo far, Infiniti's decision has been a mixed bag. Although its new naming convention is streamlined, some customers have been left scratching their head. Mercedes is taking the same risk.

However, Mercedes has experience on this front. It made a drastic naming change in 1993, but we're now used to it.

This current change is far less significant. In the short term, it will annoy some, but there shouldn't be any long term ill-effects.

It's Finally Here! An Insanely Fast BMW That Can Go Off Road

BMW X5M and X5M

BMW Motorsports' "M" cars — such the M3 and the M5 — have been hands-down the best sports sedans on the road for the past 20 years.

The cars' perfect combination of powerful engines and surgically precise handling make them the go-to vehicle of enthusiasts and road racers alike.

But more recently, BMW's has carved out quite a market for itself in the SUV market — or "Sports Activity Vehicle" market, as BMW prefers to call it.

Fans of both BMW's M cars as well as its off-roaders have been clamoring for the company's highly touted Motorsports department to give the X5 SAV and X6 SAC ("Sports Activity Coupe") a once over.

Now, those demands have been met. BMW announced this month that it will officially debut its X5M and X6M models at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which opens to the public this week.

BMW X5M and X6M

Power for both of the new M-utes comes from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine — pumping out a massive 567 horsepower. All of that oomph will flow to to all four wheels  through an 8-speed transmission.

The result is an SUV capable of making the sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph — although that number would be much close to 200 mph with the devices that limit the cars' speed removed.

Even though BMW's SUV can go off-road, they're much more at home on the streets of suburbia than tackling the the Rockies. This is especially the case for the M editions — their 21-inch sport wheels and low-profile tires are designed grip the pavement like a startled cat on a curtain.

As a result, the X5M and X6M are definitely more Porsche Cayenne than Range Rover Sport.

BMW X6 interior

BMW X5 and X6 models have been some of the company's most popular offerings in recent years. In the future. the bulk of sales expected to come from China and the US.

The X5M and the X6M can be yours for $99,000 and $103,000, respectively.

Cadillac Massage Seats

The last thing anyone wants to do at the end of a long day is spend time slogging their way through traffic.

Cadillac is trying to make that experience just a little bit more pleasant by offering a driver's seat with 22 available adjustments.

“Many Americans have the common misconception that massage is just a luxurious way to relax," said National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork board chair Dr. Leena S. Guptha in a statement provided by Cadillac.

"The benefits of massage are actually wide-ranging, especially for those that work that monotonous daily grind behind a desk or the wheel of car.”

The massage functions work pneumatically and can knead and roll along a driver's back. There is even an "anti-fatigue" function that massages the driver's seat cushions — to keep them alert during his or her commute. T

The massage function can be adjusted via Caddy's infotainment screen, as well as through seat-mounted controls.

2015 Cadillac Escalade Platinum

The adjustable massage seats are available on Cadillac's 2015 XTS luxury sedan and Escalade SUV as an optional feature.

It's Time To Stop Hating On The Cadillac Escalade

2015 Cadillac Escalade

Let's face it: big SUVs haven't escaped the stigma as gas-guzzling destroyers of the environment — and they never will, even as SUV sales in the U.S. have boomed this year.

"Responsible" people hate SUVs, and not without justification. But that doesn't mean SUVs aren't experiencing a resurgence in popularity, not does it mean that the automakers aren't happy. They love SUVs because SUVs make them a lot of money.

When you get right down to it, Americans actually like SUVs because they provide a good combination of practicality and versatility. If you have your kids, your kids' friends, a dog or two, maybe a pony and two dozen skateboards, and all the additional gear that defines American life, you're going to like an SUV.

But what about luxury SUVs? Run-of-the-mill SUVs appeal for the obvious reason that they're essentially overblown station wagons, are reasonably capable in bad weather, and avoid associations with another genre of vehicle that's stigmatized in a different way: the dreaded minivan.

Luxury SUVs are something else: they are statements.

And no luxury SUV makes a bigger statement than the Cadillac Escalade.

BEYOND SUV

Everybody builds a large, luxury SUV. There's the Lincoln Navigator. There's the Lexus LX 570. There's the Infiniti QX80. There's the Acura MDX. There's the Audi Q7. There's the Mercedes GL 550. Soon, there will be a BMW X7.

It goes on and on.

But hovering above them all like a massive monolith, a tribute to the very idea of an enormous SUV, is the Escalade.

There's the Cadillac Escalade. And there's everything else.

All those other big SUVs are fine automobiles, but what I'm trying to say here is that the Escalade, by virtue of its very Escalade-ness, has a different effect on one's psychology. You open the driver's door, using the thoughtfully illuminated handle, and you ascend to what can only be called a driving platform with the assistance of a retractable step. You settle into a realm of leather and mellow light: the instrument cluster is all digital and the infotainment screen is large.

Very quickly, your responsible person arguments fall away. The enviroment overwhelms. Good lord, this thing is vast! It could contain multitudes. The cargo compartment at the Escalade's rear seems impossibly far away.

Escalade Seats

Heck, the passenger seat seems kind of distant. You have 420 horsepower to bring to bear on the roadways, conjured by a 6.2-liter V8 engine; when you push the start button, that powerplant makes it presence briefly felt, shaking the frame of the hulking beast. But it's the briefest of shudders. And it doesn't roar when you step on it — rather, it whispers, with an almighty purpose.

On the outside, the Escalade is all great slabs of sheet metal and elongated head- and taillights, with a front grille that's as large as an entire Fiat 500 and adorned with that still-gorgeous Cadillac badge, all fake heraldry and pretense earned over the decades.

Caddy Badge

The tires look as if they belong on something designed for war.

The side-view mirrors are as big as guitar amps.

The glove compartment could hold an entire beagle.

EMPOWERMENT

I won't deny it: there's something empowering about driving the biggest car on the road. I spent a weekend driving around New York City in a 2015 Escalade — the ESV extended wheelbase version, in fact, so an even bigger Escalade than the normally enormous Escalade — and I felt like a god.

All other traffic was amusing and quaint. I remember pulling up next to what I thought was a Subaru. And then it pulled away and I realized it was a Toyota Highlander — an SUV that weighs a mere two tons to the Escalade's nearly three. If you want to indicate to a cab that you plan to take over a lane, a slight turn of the wheel in that direction, realigning the Escalade's immense form, is enough.

Sorry, little yellow interloper. So sorry.

It's also possible to employ this trick with city buses, semis, and I assume freight trains.

There's only one vehicle in all that land that can challenge the Escalade for asphalt supremacy and it's called the Hummer, and they don't make those anymore.

The Escalade ESV is based on the Chevy Suburban, which is also impressively large but certainly not as upscale as the Escalade. There's a wrinkle, however, in the luxury impression that the ESV delivers: It can come off as a a $100,000 airport shuttle. While you float above the world in a cocoon of undeniable plushness, your seat heated, your steering wheel heated, your SiriusXM radio piping the Greatest Hits of 1986 into your happy space through 16 Bose speakers, you could certainly be conveying a platoon of tourists to JFK.

Escalade Interior

But you can also drive your friends around.

All of your friends.

At once.

STOP THE HATE

Haters gonna hate. You can't avoid the core problem of the Escalade: its willfully oppressive ginormousness and the small matter that you'll only going to get around 15 mpg combined city/highway driving, making the Escalade a substantial effort on the part of General Motors to transform proven oil reserves into greenhouse gases.

This is simply a fact of life. In art, there's something known as "monumentality." It's art on a scale that's intended to provoke. It says that art can be a powerful as the sight of mountains.

The question then becomes: Should there still be monumental Cadillac Escalades and all they entail? Didn't the financial crisis and the ensuing bankruptcy of GM turn the gargantuan luxury SUV into a vanished breed? Is the Cadillac Escalade a monument to something even remotely worthy?

Well, of course not. But the Escalades continue to move among us.

And the thing is that there is a definite Escalade Effect. When you're on the outside, you seethe with anger. You're rightly appalled. But when you're on the inside, you are serene and you feel a special power thrumming within you.

Good or bad, this is what happens.

It is the transformative effect of the Escalade. No other vehicle can achieve this. No other vehicle even comes close.

Enjoy it while you still can.

The BMW X6 Is An SUV That Drives Like A Sports Car

BMW X6

When it debuted in 2008, the future of the BMW X6 seemed limited.

Not only did its aggressive styling polarize BMW fans, but its low roofline, limited storage capacity, and tight rear seating area made for little utility in the sport-utility vehicle equation.

In fact, BMW avoided the term utility altogether in its nomenclature, dubbing it the brand’s first “sport activity coupe.”

Fast-forward to 2014, and the X6 has sold over 250,000 units globally, making it an unqualified cult hit and a worthy recipient of a makeover for the 2015 model year.

The 2015 X6 drives with a nimbleness that defies its size, aided by improvements to the suspension components that include greater body rigidity, more lightweight components, and recalibrated dynamics. Aerodynamic drag has been reduced and fuel efficiency improved.

Aided by a smooth-shifting 8-speed transmission that can be operated by paddles mounted on the steering wheel, the turbocharged V-6 version of the X6 provides surprisingly sprightly acceleration despite the vehicle’s relative large size; it produces 300 hp. (An upgraded twin-turbocharged V-8 ups output to 445 hp.) Those who prefer to avoid the added weight of an all-wheel-drive system can now order the X6 in a rear-drive configuration, referred to as the X6 sDrive35i.

Also available is a Dynamic Handling Package, which uses torque vectoring and an electronic differential to deliver crisp cornering.

Though the X6’s rear accommodations are still less easily accessed than a conventional SUV’s, BMW has included such convenience features as the ability to fold the rear-seat backrests in a 40/20/40 split. The tailgate now has a power functionality that can be operated by sweeping your foot under the rear bumper. And the interior now feels airier, thanks to a standard sunroof that is 5 inches longer than that of the previous iteration.

The 2015 BMW X6 lineup—priced from $59,600—is expected to hit U.S. showrooms by year’s end.

This Is The Crossover SUV That Volkswagen Desperately Needs In The US

Volkswagen CrossBlue

After throwing enthusiasts a few wagon-shaped bones at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen is set to debut the long-roof product that really matters for the auto maker’s American division: a crossover.

A concept version of a future Tennessee-built crossover is set to debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Unlike the high-end Touraeg and the compact Tiguan, the future CUV will be a traditional five and seven seat affair, like a Ford Explorer or a Honda Pilot.

A VW CUV may be anathema to the enthusiast idea of VW as a purveyor of Euro-diesels and GTI hatchbacks, but the CUV represents a way to fill a glaring hole in VW’s American lineup, which is not getting much traction in a constantly-growing American car market.

Mercedes Just Released A Car Designed To Take Money Out Of BMW's Wallet

Mercedes Benz GLE

The Mercedes-Benz GLE sports utility coupe is not pretty.

In fact, this whole SUC (I'm not making that up, by the way) segment is not aesthetically pleasing.

And by whole "segment," I mean the BMW X6. For the past 5 years, the BMW X6 has enjoyed a complete monopoly. But the GLE, aesthetically unpleasing as it is, will surely cut into those sales and take some cash out of BMW's coffers.

Beyond the design, the big Merc looks to be quite impressive. The GLE aims to deliver a mixture of sport coupe styling and performance, with the added ground clearance and all-weather capability of an SUV. The GLE 450 AMG's 362 horsepower biturbo V6 engine will provide plenty of grunt.

"GLE Coupe displays attributes typical of coupes such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, while also exuding the self-assured presence, versatility and ruggedness of an SUV," Mercedes-AMG said in a statement.

Mercedes Benz GLE

So is the GLE worth building? It is if it steals sales away from BMW, sure. However, there simply doesn't seem to be much of a market for this type of vehicle. So far this year, BMW has moved a total of 3,400 X6s in North America. That's down 28.8% over last year. In comparison, BMW sells 10-times as many X3 and X5 conventional SUVs.

The battles lines are drawn. It remains to see who'll win, even if the fight not not be worth all that much in the end.
